Fear free practice

Experience the difference,
             a Feline Friendly Hospital.

Feline patients are often nervous whenever they get out of their comfort zone including  a trip to the veterinarian.  Many cats are not comfortable with their canine counterparts, and even the “hint” of a dog can increase their anxiety.

Taking a cat to the vet can be stressful for the cat and for their owners.  At Yosemite Pet Hospital, we take great care to provide a comfortable environment for our feline friends.

We provide a separate exam room, reserved exclusively for kitties.  No doggy smells in here!  The room has a large picture frame window that allows the cats to sit and watch our park area.  The birds, bunnies and squirrels provide an entertaining distraction for our kitty patients. The counter is made of Formica, which is warmer for cats to sit on than the standard, stainless steel.

We often ask owners to limit food before an appointment so treats are more effective. We also may need to obtain blood samples while they're here, and often kitties do not appreciate the car ride to the vet. Fasting prior to your appointment helps save you and your kitty the stress of an additional trip.

We also use "feliway spray" in the exam rooms, which is a pheromone that provides a soothing effect in this cat exclusive room.  In the hospital we have separate dog and cat wards, with exclusive cages reserved for "Kitties only".  These cages are also treated with the Feliway to help keep the kitties calm.

Our staff is trained at handling our feline pets to help reduce stress and provide tender loving care.  They are trained to take a slow approach to handling cats in order to reduce stress and fear associated with the veterinary visit.  We also provide specialized equipment used for “cats only”.

We appreciate the opportunity to help your Feline Family members enjoy a long and healthy life.

We strive to provide your dog with a comfortable experience

While your pup is here for a visit, we take care to ensure the experience is a positive one.

Fear free often begins before you enter the hospital. Conditioning your pet to a carrier, leash, and car ride are vital to starting off on the right paw. Sometimes, bringing your pet in "just because" if you're in the neighborhood, to pickup treats, prescriptions or other items allows your pet to become used to the clinic. And we're more than happy to offer a couple pats and treats to make the experience more positive.

We use "Adaptil," a pheromone in the exam room, prior to your visit. This helps keep pets calm and alleviates stress for some pets. Each room has its own exhaust system to help clear the air from previous visits, so each room has a fresh smell for your pup.

We provide daylight in animal wards, treatment areas, and exam rooms that is more inviting. We also play low volume, calm music through out the hospital, as studies have shown this to decrease stress in pets.

Physical exams for large dogs take place on a lift table or in some instances, on the floor, so that they may lay comfortably for their exam, without the stress of being placed on a higher table. We also utilize non-slip, cushioned mats on exam room tables and floors.

Our staff is very well trained on reading pets' body language, proper restraint, individualized restraint based on patients' needs and so on. We use tasty treats and baby food to distract pets for procedures like vaccinations and taking temperatures, instead of forcing a pet to hold still.

Each pet is unique in how they want to be held, which treats they prefer, and what low stress restraints work best for them. We document each of these to provide a more comfortable experience for your pets future visits.
